모든 것은 우리 안에 있다
한 연구팀이 새끼 고양이들을
빈 방에 키우면서 벽에 세로 줄무늬를 그려 놓았다.
새끼 고양이들이 어느 정도 성장한 후,
연구자들은 그들을 한 가정의 거실로 들여보냈다.
고양이들은 침대나 탁자 같은 수평 물체를
인식하지 못하고 계속해서 부딪혔다.
이는 그들의 믿음 체계에 수평선이라는
개념이 포함되어 있지 않았기 때문이다.
연구자들은 또한 일부 새끼 고양이들을
태어날 때부터 눈가리개를 씌워 키웠다.
새끼 고양이들이 자란 후 눈가리개를 벗겼을 때,
눈은 완벽히 건강했지만 아무것도 볼 수 없었다.
그들은 평생 동안 맹인으로 남았다. 그
들의 세계에는 색깔과 형태가 없었다.
우리가 세상을 경험하는 것은 단지 우리가 경험해야 한다고
믿는 것에 기반한 재구성일 뿐이다.

Everything is within us
A research team raised kittens in an empty room
with vertical stripes painted on the walls.
After the kittens had grown to a certain extent,
the researchers let them into the living room of a house.
The kittens failed to recognize horizontal objects
like beds or tables and kept bumping into them.
This was because their belief system
did not include the concept of horizontal lines.
The researchers also raised some kittens
with blindfolds from birth.
When the blindfolds were removed after the kittens had matured,
their eyes were perfectly healthy,
but they couldn't see anything.
They remained blind throughout their lives.
Their world lacked color and shape.
Our experiences of the world are merely reconstructions based on
what we believe we should experience.
Quite literally, what we believe shapes us.
Like the kittens,
we tend to readily accept the worldview supported
and believed by people in the past
