거울 뉴런
침팬지 보다 지능이 낮은 레서스원숭이에 대한 행동 실험에서
자신이 먹이를 집을 때마다 우리 안의 다른 원수이들에게
전기 충격이 가해진다는 것을 인지한 원숭이는
차라리 굶어 죽는 쪽을 택했다.
먹이를 얻어먹을 때마다
다른 원숭이의 고통스러운 비명소리가 들리자
실험 대상 원숭이는 12일 동안이나
먹기를 거부해 실험이 중단됐던 것이다.
뇌의 신경학자들이 최근에 발견된
거울 뉴런은 다른 사람이 하는 행동을 보는 것만으로도
뇌는 마치 자신이 그 행동을 하는 것처럼 느끼는 것이다.
다른 사람의 행동을 거울처럼 반영한다고 해서
붙여진 거울 뉴런은 인간의 공감능력을
과학적으로 뒷받침해 주는
현대 뇌과학의 가장 중요한 발견으로 꼽힌다.
공감은 나의 아픔에도 불구하고
다른 사람의 아픔에 관심을 갖겠다는 선택이다.

Mirror Neurons
In a behavioral experiment with rhesus monkeys,
which are less intelligent than chimpanzees,
the monkeys, recognizing that every time they pick up food,
they are subjected to electric shocks to other enemies in their enclosures,
so they choose to starve to death.
Each time the monkey was fed, the other monkeys screamed in pain,
and the test subject refused to eat for 12 days, and the experiment was stopped.
Neurologists in the brain have recently discovered mirror neurons,
which allow the brain to feel as if it were doing
what it does just by looking at what someone else is doing.
Named for their ability to reflect the actions of others like a mirror,
mirror neurons are considered one of modern neuroscience's most significant discoveries
for scientifically supporting human empathy.
Empathy is the choice to care about another person's pain despite one's own suffering.
