일시적인 존재
우리는 날 때부터 수동적인 존재여서 무언가에
등 떠밀리듯 살면 숨이 차오르기 마련이다.
대부분의 일은 그냥 두면 알아서 흐른다.
무미건조하게 들릴지 모르지만
죽음이 눈앞에 다가오면 대단한 일은 남지 않는다.
지금 허우적 되는 문제는 떠오르지도 않을 거다.
인생의 마지막 순간에 삶을 돌이켜 보면 얼마간의
만족감과 몇 가지 후회만 남는다고 하지 않던가.
무심한 마음으로 살면 더할 나위 없다.
노력하면 꿈은 이루어진다는 말에 도저히 공감할 수 없고
아무리 발버둥을 처도 나아지지 않는 현실에 지칠 대로 지친 사람,
이런 괴로움을 붙들고 있다가
불교를 접하고 우연히 태어난 이 몸뚱이가
빌린 것에 지나지 않음을 깨달으면 비로소 고개를 끄덕인다.
잠시 빌린 몸으로 받아들이자.
그런 다음 마음을 차분히 가라앉히고 괜찮다고
다독이며 생에 마지막까지 살아보면 어떨까?

A Temporary Presence
We are passive beings from birth,
so when we live as if pushed by something,
it's only natural to feel breathless.
Most things in life tend to resolve on their own if left alone.
It may sound indifferent, but when death approaches,
nothing truly grand remains.
The problems that overwhelm us now won’t even come to mind.
They say that, at the end of life,
all that remains is a bit of satisfaction and a few regrets.
Living with a detached heart is more than enough.
If you can’t relate to the idea that “dreams come true if you work hard,”
and if you’re worn out from struggling in a reality
that never improves no matter how hard you try,
then you may find comfort in Buddhism.
When you realize that this body you happened to be born
into is merely borrowed,
you finally begin to nod in understanding.
Let’s accept that our bodies are on loan, just for a while.
Then, let your mind settle,
gently reassure yourself that it’s okay,
and try living this life calmly—right to the very end.
