역사는 돈이다
역사가 시작된 이래 끊임없는
학살과 전쟁이 있었고
불과 100여 년 전까지도
노예무역, 아편 전쟁, 유대인 학살 같은
말도 안 되는 일들이 발생했다.
당시 사람들은 어떻게 이런 일들을
아무렇지도 않게 저질렀을까?
그때는 옳고 그름을 판단하는
잣대가 달랐던 것일까?
난 아니라고 생각한다.
그때도 인간의 양심은 지금과 크게
다르지 않았을 것이다.
나의 결론은 그들의 옳고 그름이 아니라
이해 득실에 따라 행동했다는 것이다.
한마디로 양심보다 돈을 택한 것이다.
영국과 프랑스의 100년 전쟁,
영국의 청교도 혁명과 명예혁명등
역사적 큰 사건의 배후에도 언제나 돈이 있었다.
이렇듯 역사의 본질을 이해하는 것이
세상에 현명하게 대처하는 지혜를 길러 준다.
그래서 우리는 과거에서 현재를 배울 수 있어야 한다.

History is Money
Since the beginning of history
there have been endless massacres and wars.
Even just a hundred years ago,
incomprehensible events
such as the slave trade, the Opium Wars, and the Holocaust occurred.
How could people of that time commit
such acts without remorse?
Did they have different standards for right and wrong?
I don't think so.
Human conscience was likely not very different
then from what it is now.
My conclusion is that their actions
were driven not by a different sense of morality,
but by calculations of profit and loss.
In other words, they chose money over conscience.
Major historical events,
such as the Hundred Years' War
between England and France, the English Civil War,
and the Glorious Revolution,
always had money as a key underlying factor.
Understanding the essence of history
helps cultivate the wisdom
to navigate the world intelligently.
Therefore, we must learn from the past to understand the present.
