소리의 힘
스승이 걸음을 멈추고 제자들을 돌아보며 물었다.
사람들은 왜 화가 나면 소리를 지르는가? 마침내 스승이 설명했다.
사람들은 화가 나면 서로의 가슴이 멀어졌다고 느낀다.
그래서 그 거리만큼 소리를 지르는 것이다.
소리를 질러야만 멀어진 상대방에게
자기 말이 가아 닿는다고 여기는 것이다.
두 사람이 사랑에 빠지며 무슨 일이 일어나는가?
사랑을 하면 부드럽게 속삭인다.
두 가슴의 거리가 매우 가깝다고 느끼기 때문이다.
남태평양의 섬에 사는 어는 부족은 쓸모없는 나무를 제거해야 할 때면
온 부족민들이 모여 그 나무를 향해 이렇게 소리를 지른다고 한다
. " 넌 필요 없는 나무야, 넌 아무 가치가 없어"
도끼나 톱으로 자르는 대신 그렇게 계속해서
큰소리로 "쓰러져라 , 쓰러져라 " 하고 외치면
얼마 안 가 나무가 시들어 죽는다는 것이다.
화가 나서 지르는 소리는 거리를
멀어지게 할 뿐 아니라 서로의 영혼을 죽게 한다.

The Power of Sound
A teacher stopped walking and turned to his disciples, asking,
"Why do people shout when they are angry?"
Finally, the teacher explained,
When people are angry, they feel that their hearts have distanced from each other.
They shout to cover that distance,
believing that their words must be loud to reach the other person.
What happens when two people fall in love?
When they love, they speak softly,
because they feel that the distance between their hearts is very close.
In a certain tribe living on a South Pacific island,
when they need to remove a useless tree,
the whole tribe gathers and shouts at the tree, saying,
"You are a useless tree, you have no value.
Instead of cutting it down with an axe or saw,
they continue to shout,
"Fall down, fall down, "
and before long, the tree withers and dies.
The shouts of anger not only widen the distance
but also kill each other's spirit.
